Developed under Mughal influence and patronised by the Nizams of Hyderabad, it produces paintings of warm, luminous beauty.
History
The Story Behind the Art
Nirmal painting has been practised in the town of Nirmal in Adilabad district for over 400 years, developed under the influence of Mughal artisans and patronised by the Asaf Jahi dynasty.
The craft involves both painting and lacquerwork — painted panels are coated with multiple layers of lacquer, giving the finished work a deep, warm glow unique in Indian painting.
Nirmal received GI protection in 2008 and is actively promoted by Telangana craft organisations.

How It Is Made

Wildlife, floral patterns, and mythological scenes are painted over the golden background. Multiple layers of lacquer are applied and polished between each layer.
